SB20 - Setting Crank Length

The Stages Cycling app is normally used to set the Stages SB20 crank length

It is a quirky process. Many people complain: The crank length changes after they set it.

They aren't necessarily seeing things...

Here's how to set crank length correctly every time

Start by opening the Stages Cycling app and going to the Stages Bike > Devices > Power Meter tab.

1. Before attempting any crank configuration, make sure the cranks are awake. Things get messy when they go to sleep or get disconnected.

2. Take Note: The Stages Cycling app sends the last setup configuration changes made in the app to the SB20 bike each time you restart the app. Examples are: gear settings (Custom or Dream Drive) and shifter button layout (Campagnolo, Shimano or Custom).

Summary:
The Stages Cycling app saves bike configuration settings and updates the SB20 bike each time you start the app.

If you have more than one copy of the app on different devices, the SB20 bike will forget its current configuration settings and inherit the settings from the last app you have used.

3. The exception to #2 is the power meter cranks. The Stages Cycling app always reads saved settings from the cranks when you go to the Power Meters tab.

Summary:
The power meter cranks save their own configuration that is sent to the Stages Cycling app when you go to the Power Meters tab .

4. When not connected, you see the last crank length setting made in the app. It does not necessarily match the actual settings saved in the cranks.

Summary:
Nothing about the cranks is certain until you see "Connected".

5. Once the cranks are connected, you can change crank length by pressing the "Crank length" item. You see a pop-up window. Make a length selection and press OK. But you are not done yet!!!

Summary:
The Stages Cycling app asks the power meter cranks to save a new crank length.

6. You must wait after making a change! The cranks must be "Connected" and you must stay on the Power Meter tab to see your change confirmed under "Crank length".

Summary:
Don't leave without waiting for confirmation of your changes.

7. If you mess up any of steps #3-#6, your crank length can be corrupted. It often shows up later as 165 mm. In reality, it could be anything.

Summary: Until you see your crank length change on the Power Meters tab, don't believe it.
